Perplexity’s $200 AI Browser ‘Comet’ Is Now Free for Everyone

Perplexity AI has officially announced free access to the Comet AI browser, making it free for all users. It was first launched for premium users for $200/month subscription.

This strategic move by Perplexity and its Indian CEO, Aravind Srinivas, is a direct competition to the dominating browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

When Perplexity first launched Comet in July 2025, it promised lots of hope for the AI community, serving as an “autonomous browser that browses for you”.

Will Comet keep up with its promise of changing manual browsing into an interactive, AI-driven experience?

Let’s find out!

With the free Comet browser, users can skip the manual searching, scrolling, and switching tabs, and can simply ask Comet to work on automode. The Comet browser can find information, summarize articles, compare products, shop online, or even make reservations.

The browser lets you create a new space or a new thread. Moreover, users can access different topics on the left sidebar panel under the Discover tab (Finance, Travel, Sports, Fitness, etc.)

With the paywall removed, Perplexity has taken a big step in competing with the biggest browser giant, Google, and hopes to make the AI web browsing experience unimaginable.

All The Comet AI Browser Free + Paid Plans

At launch, Comet was available only to Perplexity Max subscribers, who paid up to $200 per month for access to the company’s most advanced AI features. The steep price drew criticism from both users and analysts, who questioned whether an AI-powered browser justified enterprise-level pricing.

According to Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, the decision to make it free is part of a larger vision of transparent and fully accessible AI browsing.

Srinivas, in one of his interviews, said, “AI should enhance the way people experience the web — not restrict it behind expensive subscriptions,”.

The new free version is available to everyone, though it includes rate limits on AI queries and autonomous tasks.

The table below shows the present plans and pricing of the new Comet AI browser by Perplexity:

Personal:

Pro$20/month
Max$200/month

Education Pro:

Free for students and educators.

Business:

Enterprise Pro:$40/month
Enterprise Max:$325/month

Security Concerns

How could a Tech company’s product launch remain without controversy?

Many cybersecurity researchers have indicated potential vulnerabilities in the browser’s AI automation layer. It is still too soon to predict any outcome of the Comet AI browser, but there could be prompt injection attacks that trick the AI into performing unintended actions.

Reports from Brave and Guardio Labs found that Comet’s assistant could be manipulated to open phishing sites, autofill sensitive data, or even make unauthorized purchases. Perplexity has since acknowledged the issue, stating that “Security is our top priority,” a Perplexity spokesperson said. “We’re building new boundaries to ensure the AI only acts when the user explicitly approves an action.”

A Strong Challenge to Browser Competitors (Chrome and Edge)

With the launch of the free version, Perplexity has positioned its Comet AI browser as a strong competitor to Google and Microsoft.

I am sure that, soon, Comet will get integrated into mobile devices through mobile manufacturer partnerships, offering it as the default browser on select platforms.

Perplexity’s AI browser release also comes at a time when users are overwhelmed with Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot. Google is experimenting with its Gemini-powered Chrome, Microsoft has added Copilot to Edge, and startups like The Browser Company’s Arc and Opera One are adding AI copilots of their own.

The Future of Browsing

This is all from the Perplexity AI news for now. As AI continues to revolutionize digital marketing and advance browsing experiences, Comet promises to bring forth a bold “agentic browsing.”

We are still not sure if users will rely on an AI browser to act on their behalf, but the move to make Comet free is likely to accelerate adoption and testing.

There’s a new rival in the browser galaxy that has made a bold step to make an AI browser free. Browsing the web might no longer mean typing into a search bar, but simply asking an intelligent AI assistant to get things done quickly.
